The Inkjet Research Facility (IRF) works with clients, artists and researchers to create artworks using a wide range of digital printing and scanning techniques. The variety of printers and scanners available allow for experimental approaches to digitally printing on unusual substrates and materials.
Researchers in this area are investigating how the combination of digital and analogue processes can produce photographic prints of exceptional physical and optical quality unachievable through conventional processes.

Unlike high volume commercial businesses, the IRF lets clients and researchers collaborate with experts to give them hands-on creative control over the process and the ability to develop new ways of producing their work.
Past clients include Canberra Museum & Art Gallery, Drill Hall Gallery and ANU Centre on China in the World, as well as artists such as Richard Larter, Michael Callaghan, Mike Parr, Robert Boynes, Gary Smith, Marzena Wasikowska, Lee Grant, Peter Maloney, Richard Blackwell and Martyn Jolly.
Agfa Anapurna M2540 UV cured inkjet printer
Prints on a wide variety of substrates such a paper, canvas, wood, metal, plastic, glass, concrete and textiles. Substrates may have a wide variety of colours from light to dark, and a wide variety of textures from glossy to porous. Prints from a few centimetres up to a scale of 1.5 metres by 2.45 metres, and on objects up to 4 cm thick.
Prints high quality photographs in twelve-colour archival pigment with extended colour control up to a width of 1.52 metres.
Prints fine-art black and white photographs with extended tonal graduation up to a width of 1.12 metres.
Hassleblad Flextight X-1 drum scanner
Scans small, medium and large format negatives and transparencies at the extremely high resolution of 6300ppi
Creo IQ Smart scanner
Scans reflective media as well as negatives and transparencies up to A3 size at 2540ppi.
Spectrophotometer X-Rite i1Pro
Determines accurate colour profiling on a wide range of media.
Agfa papers in gloss, semi-gloss, and matte, as well as Inova heavy weight fine art paper

UV cured printing (own substrate provided):
Due to setup times there is an $80 minimum charge for printing.
The first test print on a sample of the substrate is free, however additional tests may incur a charge at the lab's discretion
Additional labour above reasonable table setup: $20 per 15 minute increments.
Pricing per square meter of media (not ink coverage):
$125 per square metre for CYMK (colours only)
$150 per square metre CYMKW (colours with white ink)
For specialised projects, for example using multiple passes, modified files, UV dry delay, wet ink modification, complicated image making and unusual shapes, please contact the IRF for a specific quote.

Ilfords Prestige Smooth Cotton Rag: 100% cotton rag, very smooth surface, no optical brighteners, high color consistency and gamut, water resistance. Comes in 432mm (17"), 610mm (24") and 1120mm (44") rolls
Semi gloss paper:
Hahnemühle FineArt: Baryta 315 gsm, 100% Cotton, white high-gloss. Comes in 432mm (17"), 610mm (24") and 1120mm (44") rolls
We also offer other papers to suits projects, typically in the Hahnemühle, Ilford and Awagami lines.

$50/hour for initial set-up, assisted experimentation, printing or scanning instruction and supervision, and file preparation
$180 per linear meter on semi gloss stock

Please supply files in a .TIF or PDF format, with the Adobe RGB colour space, and at size.
