Shanti Shea-An has won the University Medal for 2016, graduating from Painting at ANU School of Art with First Class Honours and as the highest achieving student in the school. This year, there were only three medals awarded across the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences.

Shanti’s final Honours presentation, titled 'On Love, In Painting', was comprised of a series of paintings accompanied by an exegesis. Her project was to consider how the activities of painting and loving might be considered analogous. Starting with a consideration of the ways that divine love has been depicted in historical painting, she then tested how the sensations of touch, as depicted via light, and the gestural marks of the painter, could be activated to create a sense of intimacy between the painter, painting and viewer. The exegesis part of her Honours project referenced a broad range of artists’ and writers’ to synthesis complex ideas and approaches with in her own work.

She had a solo exhibition, 'Other Loves', at Canberra Contemporary Art Space in 2016.
