Sculpture alumnus gets to the core of the backyard

“Backyards” 2013, a sculpture by Martin Rowney from the ANU School of Art Sculpture workshop has been selected for Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe, Perth. The exhibition will be held in March 2014.

The work comprises imagined layers of strata composed of human cultural detritus interwoven through the physical sediments of geological events.  Backyards represents the idea that we all have an individual history and we all contribute to the archaeology of the future.

It was also exhibited at the Willoughby Sculpture Prize in September this year (pictured).

Backyards will also be temporarily installed at Old Parliament House Canberra where Martin will be presenting a paper about art and archaeology at the upcoming ICOMOS conference ‘imagined pasts…imagined futures’, a Centenary of Canberra event from Thursday 31 October to Sunday 3 November 2013.
