The ANU School of Art & Design is excited to announce the appointment of Dr Jeffrey Sarmiento, to the School of Art & Design.

Jeffrey was awarded his practice-based PhD in 2011. He was a 2003 Fulbright Fellow in Denmark taking an ethnographic approach to understanding glass culture and folktale, using this as a catalyst for new artwork. Arriving at the University of Sunderland as a Research Council UK Academic Fellow he has held the position of Reader in Glass since 2011.

Publication and teaching are core to his research as an artist and academic. He has been an active researcher in print with a specialisation in glass and ceramics since 2002. He is co-editing The Glass Reader, a new critical text and the first of its kind in the glass art field, which will be published with Bloomsbury in 2020. His international practice includes explorations of novel approaches to 2, 2.5 and 3D print using both analogue and digital fabrication techniques.

He was a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Centre for Doctoral Training coordinated between University of Sunderland and Northumbria University.

His successes in creative practice include awards from Arts Council England, the International Glass Prize 2012 and the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers of London. His work is held in museum collections in the USA, UK, Denmark and Germany, and he has recently shown in Glasstress, a collateral event of the 2015 Venice Biennale. He has been represented by Bullseye Projects USA, and has significant public commissions in the UK, produced in the unique facility of National Glass Centre.

We are delighted that he will be joining our School and University.
