Joe Kember is an Associate Professor in Film at the University of Exeter, UK. His research is in popular and visual culture throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and especially in the magic lantern, early and silent cinema. He has conducted several funded projects in this research field, and has published numerous books and articles concerning popular entertainments, exhibitions, and displays between 1850 and 1914. Recent articles and chapters have tackled themes including spectatorship, performance and screening practices in exhibition sites such as Victorian freak shows, lecture theatres, public halls, and the magic theatre, as well as early film shows. His monograph, Marketing Modernity: Victorian Popular Shows and Early Cinema (Exeter: University of Exeter Press, 2009), provides an expansive analysis of the institutional development of early film in relation to emergent models of self-identity and personality at the turn of the century. He is currently completing a major co-authored book, Picture Going: Popular Visual Media in the South-West 1840-1914, which will be the central published output from a previous project. Other publications have addressed issues concerning the representation of the human face during live performance and on film, in both silent and modern cinema. Kember is currently the Principal Investigator in the UK for the pan-European project ‘A Million Pictures: Magic Lantern Slide Heritage as artefacts in the Common European History of Learning,’ funded by a JPI Heritage grant. Alongside wider project aims, the UK Million Pictures team is digitising and providing open access to thousands of slides from public collections within the international Lucerna Magic Lantern Web Resource, as well as providing creative re-use events to bring lantern images to the wider public.
