Artist statement

"My practice is inspired by a desire to escape from information overload. We receive great amounts of data from the world around us – for example the constant sights, sounds and information from the internet and media, often presented in such a way that the message also dictates an appropriate and expected reaction. When we are bombarded with more information than ever before, I wanted to determine if there is space for art that tells us very little. I began this exploration with my 2013 graduating work, 'Grey Areas', testing the degree to which formal qualities could combine to create dynamic and compelling sculptures, when there is no overt content or narrative. I created multiple installations, each containing similar sculptures of various scales, in similar colours and shapes. Exploiting spatial formal properties to create relationships between the sculptures also allowed room for relationships to develop between work and viewer. The non-representational, intensely geometric paper sculptures in 'Grey Areas' now form the core of my work. By developing work that provides limited information, I hope to liberate viewers from information overload, potentially giving them the freedom required to engage with the work in a purely sensory way."

Jen Fullerton graduated with Honours in 2013 and is a current PhD Candidate in the Sculpture Workshop.
