Andrzej Zielinski’s vivid paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures depict everyday electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, ATM machines and paper shredders. In contrast to a lot of his contemporaries, painting and sculpture are for him physical realities resulting from handcrafted traditional processes, rather than machine-made and marketed products. Distortion, strange colour combinations and unexpected conflations of materials are at odds with the actual ubiquitous objects based on generic design templates that have become the modern vernacular of our daily lives. His artworks beckon the viewer to interface with them. He explores contemporary communication by using the ancient form communication: art.
Born in 1976 in Kansas City, USA, Zielinski completed his BFA at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2002 and his MFA at Yale University in 2004. He has been in numerous group shows across the USA such as Greater New York at PS1 MOMA. Previous solo exhibitions include Motus Fort, Tokyo, DCKT Contemporary New York City, The Dolphin Gallery, Kansas City, Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, New York and Marc Selwyn Fine Art, Los Angeles. He had his first major museum exhibition in 2015 at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City.
Andrzej Zielinski lives and works in Berlin, Germany. His first exhibition in Australia was Devices at Gallery 9 in June 2011. His work was also shown at Canberra Contemporary Art Space in July 2011. His work will be shown in an upcoming solo exhibition at Gallery 9 in Sydney opening 19 October.
