Katy Mutton
To be opened by Alison Alder, Head Printmedia & Drawing, School of Art
Australia’s current investment in military defence is well over $100 billion, which includes significant funds being directed toward it’s current and future arsenal of military aviation machines. These machines include drones (unmanned aerial vehicles), fighters, maritime surveillance and future electronic warfare planes.
While our military aviation spending expands, it could be argued that public understanding and recognition of the details of our expenditure commitments is contracting. In an effort to draw attention to the relationship that we have with the technology of war this collection of screen printed posters, focuses on a key selection of the military aviation machines which now occupy a place in the Australian military story.
Katy Mutton is a multi disciplinary visual artist whose practice is informed by an ongoing concern with warfare, the machines of war and related impacts on communities and our cultural identity. Most recently Katy’s work has focused on perception, propaganda and camouflage through drawing, painting and printmaking. Katy holds a BA in Visual Art (ANU School of Art) and a BA in Environmental Design (UC, 2002). Katy has been the recipient of several awards including the 2016 Print Council Commission, artsACT Project Fund, a Canberra Critics Circle Award and an Australia Council ArtStart grant. Recent residenciesi nclude Bundanon Trust NSW and Megalo Print Studio + Gallery ACT and The Art Vault VIC.
