The ANU Ceramics Workshop presents the 2nd Print and Clay Symposium. Bringing together a diverse range of international, national and local printmakers and ceramicists to demonstrate. Many of these will be drawn from Canberra and include ceramicists Janet DeBoos, Anita McIntyre, Petra Svoboda & Joanne Searle - Printmakers inlcude Patsy Payne, John Pratt & Katy Mutton.

International artists include Kevin Petrie (UK), Stephen Dixon (UK) & Suzanne Wolfe (USA).

The Symposium model aims to draw together established artists, members of the community and students. Artists working alongside and in collaboration with each other will stimulate the reworking of traditional techniques and challenge conventional print practices.

As a showcase of this event the demonstrators and participants will be invited to exhibit selected works made during the symposium at ANCA Gallery from 18th – 28th September, 2013. Readymade cylindrical forms with variations in height and width will be provided. The artists will have an opportunity to decorate these forms with printed surfaces either as individuals or in collaboration with other artists.

Stephen Dixon

Professor Stephen Dixon studied Fine Art at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and Ceramics at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1986. His early exhibitions in London with Contemporary Applied Arts and the Crafts Council established a reputation for figurative ceramics with a biting political and social satire. Anatol Orient introduced Dixon’s work to the U.S.A. in the early nineteen nineties, resulting in solo exhibitions at Pro-Art, St. Louis (1993) Garth Clark Gallery, New York (1995) and Nancy Margolis Gallery, New York (1998).

Dixon combines studio ceramics with regular public and community projects; in 2000 he received an Arts Council ‘Year of the Artist’ award for a collaborative project with Amnesty International and Kosovan refugees, and in 2009 was commissioned to produce the ceramic sculpture ‘Monopoly’ for the British Ceramic Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent.

Dixon is currently engaged as Professorial Research Fellow in Contemporary Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University, investigating political narrative and the contemporary printed image. He was recently engaged as the first artist-in-residence in the new Ceramic Galleries at the V&A.

His work features in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Arts & Design, New York; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the British Crafts Council; San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts; The Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh; The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; and Manchester Art Gallery.

Suzanne Wolfe

Suzanne Wolfe was born in Chicago, Illinois and received three degrees from the University of Michigan, including a BA in anthropology in 1965, a BSD in art in 1968, and an MFA with concentration in ceramics in 1970. Since 1971, she has been a professor of ceramics at the University of Hawai’i in Honolulu, Hawai’i, where she teaches courses at all levels. Her specialty is mold-making and image transfer techniques.

Her work is included in collections in the United States (Honolulu Academy of Arts; the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina; and Arizona State University Museum in Tempe, Arizona) as well as international venues (the collections of Ms. Yaeko Shiotsuki, Tokyo, Japan; the American Ceramics Museum in Fuping, Shaanxi Province, China; the Taipei Yingke Museum of Ceramics, and Anadolu University Art Museum in Turkey).

She has organized the East-West Ceramics Collaborations for professional ceramic artists held at the University of Hawai’i in 1995, 1998, 2002, and 2006, which have included workshops, presentations, and exhibitions, and has published video and CD documentation of the events. In addition, she has organized the Korea/Hawaii and Asia/Pacific workshops for students and faculty in 2003 and 2004, respectively.

Her work in ceramics utilizes both vessel and sculptural forms. The surfaces often pair text and image to reference social or historical issues and events.

Suzanne will focus on underglaze print techniques such as transfer printing from plaster & paper.

Kevin Petrie

Kevin Petrie studied BA (Hons) Illustration at the University of Westminster (1993) and MA Ceramics and Glass (1995) at the Royal College of Art. He holds a Ph.D. ‘Water-based ceramic transfer printing’ from the Centre for Fine Print Research, University of the West of England, Bristol (1999). Petrie leads the academic team in glass and ceramics at the University of Sunderland. He was appointed ‘Professor of Glass and Ceramics’ in 2008 and ‘Team Leader for Glass and Ceramics’ 2010.

Petrie is known for blending printmaking and glass/ceramics for creative use. This includes the development of new processes and the dissemination of new practice internationally. He has written two books on the subject - Glass and Print and Ceramic Transfer Printing - and published a number of articles in key journals. Kevin will focus his demonstration on overglaze transfer techniques.
