Marcel Hoogstad Hay received his Bachelor of Visual Arts with Honours from the ANU School of Art & Design Glass Workshop in 2012. Since finishing he completed the two-year Associate Training Program at JamFactory, Adelaide and has undertaken residencies at Berlin Glas, Germany and Salem Sate University, USA. Marcel has recently returned from Oaxaca, Mexico where he was helping to establish a new hot glass studio.

He is currently undertaking a residency in the ANU SOA&D Glass Workshop where he is exploring optical and astronomical phenomena in his work. “Within my practice I draw from traditional Venetian cane techniques, exploring and creating complex patterns and optical effects in glass. Observing the way light and space are effected during occurrences such as black holes and gravitational lenses has led me to think about how images and patterns can form or distort around focal points. Using contrasting colours and complex line-work I aim to create optical effects and subtle visual shifts in my work.”
