Summer in Moominland

Between May and August this year Ruth was an Australia Council artist-in-residence with HIAP on the island of Suomenlinna, fifteen minutes by ferry from Helsinki, Finland.
Suomenlinna is an C18th fortress island and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ruth explored the landscape of the island, the massive stone walls and tunnels, rocky shorelines and fabulous wildflowers in the midsummer light and spent time in the studio making several new series of small works. Ruth will also talk about her impressions of the Helsinki art scene, key exhibitions and the connections she made with staff from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, artists and local curators and galleries, plus a brief trip to Oslo to visit our dear former librarian, Irene Hansen.

Ruth Waller is the Head of the Painting Workshop.
