Video compositing with green screen

Creative Media, Photography and Visual Arts for Teachers - TQI Accredited Professional Learning Programs

A digital compositing workshop covering lighting and video capture in the green screen studio, and matte creation in the computer lab. Software grading tools will be used to convincingly and creatively combine separate video layers into a believable scene. Working in a large green screen compositing studio and computer laboratory, participants will combine different images to create a coherent visually convincing whole. The program will begin with a lighting and camera workshop in the green screen studio. The workshop will continue in the computer lab where the footage will be combined with a background using mattes created in both After Effects and Premiere Pro. A variety of source material will be provided in addition to the material created in the workshop. Participants may also bring their own personal images to incorporate in their work. A basic knowledge of After Effects or PremierePro is assumed.

2:00 – 3:30pm Participants will learn how to light and record digital video in a green screen studio for compositing. Digital video will be devised captured for compositing
3:30 – 5:30pm In the computer lab participants will create mattes, industry standard software will be used to grade and combine different images to create a final composite image in both Premiere Pro and After Effects

5:30 – 6:00pm Participants will collectively reflect on their output and the work of their peers.

Kit Devine is a lecturer in Photography and Media Arts. She worked in industry for 20 years as a computer graphics animator and visual effects artist. She then taught at the AFTRS for 4 years and has been at the Australian National University since 2011.
