Ralph Kiggell

Ralph Kiggell practises and teaches water-based woodblock printing, and participates in exhibitions and workshops in many different countries. He has a BA in Chinese Studies from SOAS, London University (1983), and an MA in Printmaking from Tama Arts University, Tokyo (1999).

As a printmaker, I mostly work with wood. I learned woodblock printing in Japan using water-soluble pigments and printing only by hand. The process is intimate and each of the materials involved demand subtle differences in use: the wood, the knives, the brushes, the paper, the traditional printing pads, and the pigments, which are applied using the element water.

Ralph Kiggell is a visiting artist in the SOA&D Printmedia & Drawing workshop.
