Grant to fund The Witness Tree Project

The ANU Furniture Workshop has been named a recipient of the 2012 ACT Heritage Grant for The ACT Witness Tree Project.  The grant award of $18,050 was presented by Simon Corbell, Minister for the Environment & Sustainable Development to ANU Furniture Workshop Head Ashley Eriksmoen on 5 September, 2012.

The ANU Furniture Workshop will work in cooperation with the Urban Tree Managers of the National Capital Authority and the ACT Government to salvage timber from trees scheduled for removals, and to distribute timber for the creation of wood objects that reflect on ACT heritage.

This grant will provide a unique opportunity for ACT artists and craftspeople to engage with local history by making objects from Canberra’s urban trees that would otherwise be mulched at the end of their useful life.  The Witness Tree Project also allows the public to experience ACT Heritage through a different lens, through the exhibition of wooden objects inspired by local history.

The ANU School of Art Furniture Workshop is extremely pleased and honoured to be able to host The Witness Tree Project at the time of Canberra’s Centennial.   To read more about becoming involved with the project, visit the Witness Tree Project.
