On April 15, one of Australia’s leading artists and former student of the ANU School of Art, Daniel Boyd, was named as the recipient of the 2014 BVLGARI ART AWARD.

Born in Cairns and now based in Sydney, Boyd receives $80, 000 for the award that includes his painting being acquired by the Italian jewellery brand Bulgari for $50,000 and a $30,000 residency in Italy.

The selection of the winning piece was guided by the Art Gallery of New South Wales with Dr Michael Brand announcing Boyd as the winner.

The piece, Untitled, 2014, is a painting using oil, pastel and archival glue and based on a found photograph of Pentecost Island in Vanuatu. Boyd’s great, great grandfather was born on the island but was taken to the sugarcane fields in Queensland as a slave.
