David Hansen’s ‘Catching the jellyfish: presence and absence in the work of Jan Senbergs’ essay has just been published in the catalogue of the artist’s retrospective 'Jan Senbergs: observation-imagination', which opened last week at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Dr Hansen has previously published on Senbergs’ mining subjects (Artlink, December 2013). This new essay considers the significance of the ‘father-figures’ - Wilbrahim Liardet, Robert Carl Sticht, Carsten Borchgrevink and William Buckley - that preside over the artist’s Port Melbourne, Queenstown, Antarctic and Otways series.
