Earlier this year sculptor David Jensz took part in a four week residency at Columbus State University, Department of Art, Georgia in America. Jensz was given the opportunity to make a permanent sculpture for Lenore Hall, one of the science buildings on Main Campus.

Jensz described the short residency time line: Over the first week Jensz developed the concept for the sculpture that would be suitable for the space and presented it to the Science Faculty staff and academics. The concept was to make a “whirlpool” out of clear plastic tubing tied together with plastic zip ties. The spiraling conical structure suspended between the top and second floors would activate the space as people walk up and down the stairs. By the second and third week the build had began on the armature for the piece with the help of a number of third year sculpture student. By the fourth week the sculpture was installed.

Jensz named “Event Horizon” after the term used by Physicists to describe the zone around a Black Hole in space. It is effectively the perimeter of the Black Hole, the point beyond which nothing can escape the gravitational force of the enigmatic phenomena, not even light. Jensz' supposition was that there may be physical and other correlations between Black Holes in Space and whirlpools in water. The sculpture referenced and connected with many different people who use the building, but also as a cultural bridge connecting the Sciences with the Arts and successfully created dialogue between the two faculties.
