Dr Robert Wellington, senior lecturer in the Centre for Art History and Theory has been awarded a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA).

This coveted grant is awarded by the Australian Government through the Australian Research Council (ARC). The title of Robert's project is 'Art and Cultural Diplomacy.'

This grant will allow Robert to pursue his path-breaking into the global circulation of art in the early modern period.

‘Art and Cultural Diplomacy’ looks at the ‘lives’ of diplomatic gifts sent from the Court of Louis XIV to other countries in Europe, Asia, and the New World. The main aim of the project is to investigate largely overlooked questions about cross-cultural exchange that are raised when many copies of certain art objects—prints or medals—exist in distant lands across the globe. This project uses historical case studies of the role of art in cultural diplomacy to develop a better understanding of cross-cultural communication in an increasingly connected world.‘Art and Cultural Diplomacy’ looks at the ‘lives’ of diplomatic gifts sent from the Court of Louis XIV to other countries in Europe, Asia, and the New World.
