where science meets art
Insight Radicals is an exhibition featuring Head of Painting Ruth Waller and School of Art alumna Anna Madeleine at MCLEMOI Gallery, Chippendale from November 26 to December 14, exhibition opening 26 November, 6:30pm
Diverse in outcomes, Insight Radicals presents a unique art and science exhibition.
Making its Australian debut this November, the touring INSIGHT RADICAL exhibition has recently returned from the prestigious Griffin Gallery, London and will travel to Adelaide in 2014.
The exhibition captures a creative journey into free radical chemistry, first embarked on by a group of curiosity-led Australian artists and scientists in 2012.
The group of artists are Tony Lloyd, Steve Lopes, Anna Madeleine, Natalie O’Connor, Peter Sharp and Ruth Waller and they express their fascination with free radicals, inspired by a yearlong residency at the Bio 21 Laboratories of Melbourne University.
For Ruth Waller, it was free radical patterns that she found intriguing, becoming fascinated by the order of such patterns and then the disorder when finely balanced reactions break down. Waller has explored the folklore figure Dulle Griet (Dull Gret) - drawing parallels between her research on Dulle Griet and her free radical learnings.
Anna Madeleine, amongst her other works, has revealed a close personal connection with art and science; creating 3D, spray painted “pixilated portraits” of her father (a climate scientist) and grandfather (a scientist and artist).
