Congratulations to Liz Coats, winner of the 2011 Winsor & Newton Start Your Studio Scholarship!

Liz Coats is a PHD Candidate from the Painting workshop of the ANU School of Art, her artists' statement follows:

I make abstract paintings with colour choices that are responsive to conditions in the local environment, both colours as they are perceived dimensionally in light, and translated through the dynamic potential of water‐based paint media. Colours in the Organica paintings are carried in layered pentagonal formations with experimental paint applications. My Ph.D. thesis is concerned with sensory aspects of abstract painting. I’ve always been keen to keep in mind the aspirations of artists who were historic initiators of abstraction internationally, and whose paintings were both structurally articulate and humanistic in intent.
