Portrayal and Identity:
Two-day Symposium:
Thursday 21 – Friday 22 March 2013
This exciting two-day symposium is compulsory for all undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in the Painting workshop, but is also open to students from workshops within the school. This two-day event is free of charge but is not catered for. Cafes and food outlets are in walking distance of each venue.

As part of this symposium, the painting workshop will host an exhibition of works from ANU School of Art students.
DAY 1
Thursday 21 March

- 5pm - 6pm Drill Hall Gallery, The Bridge and the Fruit Tree: Making Art in the Age of Post Memory, A conversation with Jacqueline Lo, Arron Seeto & John Young.
- 6pm – 8pm School of Art Gallery, Opening drinks at the School of Art Gallery for 1/2013 School of Arts Graduate Season 2013 including symposium speaker, Vanessa Barbay, Doctor of Philosophy, Painting
DAY 2
Friday 22 March
10.00am - 3:30 pm
Venue | James Fairfax Theatre, National Gallery of Australia
- 9-10 am Symposium participants are invited on a free tour of the Toulouse-Lautrec: Paris and the Moulin Rouge exhibition. Please meet at the front entrance of the NGA at 9am sharp to be included!
- 4pm – 8pm Symposium participants will be invited to return to the School of Art for The Art School Anecdote, a celebratory work curated by international artists Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich.
The Portrayal and Identity Guest speakers include;
- Ian Gibbins, Professor of Anatomy and Histology, School of Medicine, Flinders University
- Marcia Pointon, Senior Research Professor, Norwich University of the Arts; Professor Emeritus of History of Art, University of Manchester UK and Research Fellow at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London.
- Jude Rae, Painter, 2005 and 2008 winner of the Portia Geach Memorial Award
- Ross Woodrow, Professor and Deputy Director (Postgraduate & Research) QCA, Griffith University
- Nicola Dickson, Painter, PhD ANU School of Art

On day three, a public symposium to celebrate visiting Professor Marcia Pointon’s book launch will also be held at the National Portrait gallery on Saturday 23 March. Morning tea and afternoon refreshments are included in the registration price.
