Valerie Kirk awarded ACT Creative Arts Fellowship for 2013

Valerie Kirk, Head of the Textiles Workshop at the ANU School of Art, has been awarded the ACT Creative Arts Fellowship for 2013, valued at $45,000. Valerie has been awarded the prestigious Fellowship to allow her to undertake research and develop a new body of contemporary woven tapestries. She will also complete work on the large tapestry commissioned by the ANU to recognize the awarding of a Nobel prize to Professor Brian P. Schmidt and oversee the $88,000 research grant to develop the Canberra Centenary Community Tapestry, a major new tapestry project funded by the Canberra Centenary and the ACT Legislative Assembly. Valerie is also one of the coordinators of the Selling Yarns 3 conference and exhibition. This major international event promotes textile and design practices of Indigenous artists from across Australia is a partnership of Craft ACT, the National Museum of Australia and the ANU and will be held from 28 February to 3 March 2013.
