About us

The Australian National University (ANU) School of Art & Design is Australia’s most influential art and design institution. We train the world’s leading designers, artists, art historians, and curators, generating knowledge and cutting-edge practices for a vibrant and future-focused society.

The School’s exceptional facilities and staff enable industry-leading research and production. Situated within Australia’s top ranked university*, our interdisciplinary research addresses the big ideas and urgent issues of our nation and beyond.

Our School is internationally recognised for studio-based teaching across visual arts, contemporary craft and design. We embrace an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach, where new technologies augment traditional media. Our dedicated Centre for Art History and Art Theory (CAH&AT) offers acclaimed courses to develop critical thinking and curatorship skills.

Located in an iconic, heritage listed Art Deco building in the centre of the nation’s capital, the ANU School of Art & Design has strong relationships with Australia’s peak cultural institutions, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of Australia. We also provide our students with opportunities to gain real-world experience through internships in Australia and overseas. Additionally, our artist-in-residence and international exchange programs connect our students with a global network of leading researchers and art & design institutions.

The School of Art & Design is one of four Schools that form the Research School of Humanities and the Arts within the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences. The ANU is a leading Australian Group of Eight research-intensive university. We are ranked number one in Australia and consistently ranked among the top universities in the world. The ANU is a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and the only Australian University to be a member of the International Alliance of Research Universities.
