Sustainable Creative Careers: Writing Workshops for Artists

Writing Workshops for Artists

2 Sessions – Tuesday 10 & Tuesday 24 November

This is a two-part program for practicing artists who are based in the ACT or surrounding region. It will be most useful for people who would like an intro to writing artist statements and bios, or would like to brush up on their existing skills. The longer format of three hours has been programmed to allow plenty of time for practical exercises and discussion. Participants will be given the opportunity to do some writing on the spot, and group exercises in break-out rooms. In the second session of the program, participants will be asked to bring writing to the session so they can receive feedback and work on refining and editing their writing.

Participants will only be able to register for the second session (24 November) if they have attended the first session.

Session 1 Tuesday 10 November:

Introduction to artist statements and bios

Considering different contexts and aims for statements and bios

Practical exercises:

• Getting started – addressing the blank page/ blank screen

• Writing about a single work of art

• Writing about a body of work

• Writing a general artist statement

• Writing a bio

Session 2 Tuesday 24 November:

• Bring writing generated from the previous session / or another piece you’d like to work on

• Getting fresh eyes on your work

• Playful ways to get a different perspective on your writing
