Born in Tamil Nadu, Southern India, Alwar Balasubramaniam trained as a painter and printmaker; he is now better known for his works in sculpture. His works often activate illusionary space and prompt viewers to question the connection between the semiotic and visual form. His works which often play with preconceptions of the physical environment, questioning parameters of time, form, perspective, and the traces of individuals and their pasts. According to the artist, these form the basis of our identities.
