Anthea Callen in BBC1's Fake or Fortune

Tuesday 10 November 2015

Emeritus Professor Anthea Callen appeared in BBC1's Fake or Fortune on Sunday July 12th 2015, on an early 'plein air' oil study of the Seine river at Argenteuil by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, which was viewed by just under 5 million people.

Anthea discussed the painter's techniques, drawing and brushwork, and provided behind-the-scenes guidance on authenticating the artist's palette colours and materials. She agreed with Renoir's Paris dealer Bernhein Jeune who include the painting in their Renoir catalogue raisonne, that the painting was indeed a Renoir - but considered it a weak painting, of which there are a considerable number. However the Wildenstein Foundation in Paris, who are preparing a rival 'critical' catalogue of Renoir's oeuvre, disagreed.
