The ANU School of Art & Design would like to congratulate Sophie Dumaresq, alumna of the School, selected for the 2024 Hatched: National Graduate Show.
The Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) has today announced the artists selected for the 2024 Hatched: National Graduate Show – PICA’s eagerly anticipated annual flagship exhibition that celebrates Australia’s most exciting emerging artists, on display from 3 August to 13 October.
Now in its 33rd year, Hatched continues to provide an essential platform for early-career artists, and for some, it marks their first experience exhibiting at a major arts institution. As the only exhibition of its kind in Australia, Hatched presents the artists’ works to a national audience and facilitates connections with their peers from across the country.
2024 marks the fifteenth anniversary of the Dr Harold Schenberg Arts Awards. PICA is thrilled to have renewed its partnership with The University of Western Australia to present four Hatched artists with these awards, valued collectively at $50,000. The Dr Harold Schenberg Arts Awards are made up of three $15,000 prizes and one People’s Choice Award of $5,000 that will be awarded at the end of the exhibition.
PICA’s Director/CEO Hannah Mathews notes that ‘Hatched is a highlight of PICA’s annual program. We are committed to working with artists across their careers and supporting them to sustain their practices across a lifetime.
‘Hatched is that time every year when we get to connect and invest in the very best of the next generation of Australian artists – celebrating their achievements, providing them with training and importantly creating a national network for them that stays with them throughout their careers.’
Since 1992, Hatched has exhibited the work of over 1,400 art school graduates who have been nominated by their teachers and then selected by a panel of nationally acclaimed artists and curators. Hatched’s notable alumni includes the Gold Lion Winner of this year’s Venice Biennale, Archie Moore, along with Julie Gough, Shaun Gladwell and Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran.

Pushing the boundaries of traditional art-making materials and processes, the 2024 exhibition explores a wide range of mediums including ceramics, illustration, performance, poetry, text, music, woodcraft, video, textiles, photography, sculpture, printmaking and painting.
Hatched addresses some of the most compelling issues of our time and 2024 sees artists responding strongly to identity and heritage. Yuwaalaraay, Gamillaraay and Kooma/Koama woman Melissa Stannard (QLD) draws on her family’s history of military service, examining the significant contribution of Aboriginal service personnel. Ka Yan SO (Kelly) (VIC) is influenced by her diasporic experiences between Hong Kong and Australia, investigating the essence and significance of ‘home’ through navigating memories, psycho-analysing familial relationships and exploring cultural identity. Ruby Stevens (QLD) examines constructions of value, care, and their complex connections to gendered labour through a queer, feminist lens by using an animatronic arm to make a pancake mixture. And Kasia Kolikow (WA) explores her place in this multi-layered world – living in a rental home situated in one of Perth’s most expensive inner-city suburbs – in a country she was born in but feels culturally distant from.
Throughout the exhibition themes of materialism and human impact on the environment are also explored. Frances Malcomson’s (TAS) work focuses on unattended plants that infiltrate city sites, engaging with contemporary botanical art and aligning interpretations with post-humanist philosophies of environmental aesthetics. Edie Duffy (VIC) takes pictures from eBay listings and works them into a canvas, following an interest in found photos and second-hand objects to investigate her everyday surroundings. And Jamee Baker (NSW) explores themes of the environment, life and death, and spectatorship through observation using drawing and stitching.
The 2024 Hatched selection panel, comprised of Dennis Golding (artist, curator and Hatched alumni 2019, Sydney); Sebastian Henry-Jones (curator, West Space, Melbourne); and Sarah Wall (curator, PICA), stated: ‘The process of selecting the artists for Hatched was no easy task and is a testament to the high calibre of artists graduating from art schools across Australia. The artists chosen for Hatched displayed thought-provoking practices and used materials in resourceful ways. We believe this exhibition will engage audiences through the complex and considered ideas presented while celebrating the compelling works of early-career artists.’
In addition to the exhibition, PICA offers studio residencies to one interstate and one Perth-based Hatched artist every year. In 2024 Frances Malcomson (TAS) from the University of Tasmania and Kasia Kolikow (WA) from North Metropolitan TAFE will undertake residencies at PICA from 5–31 August to concentrate on developing their practice.
‘Minderoo Foundation is proud to once again support PICA’s Hatched Curatorial Fellow to deliver this important exhibition and enrich the WA arts landscape. Every year, Hatched brings together artists from across Australia to showcase their talent in a powerful exhibition that engages and inspires audiences,” says Penny Dakin, Executive Director of Communities at Minderoo Foundation.
‘We congratulate Hatched Curatorial Fellow Brent Harrison and all of the featured artists, and we look forward to exploring this year’s show.’
