Vale Matthew Harding

The ANU School of Art & Design community are saddened to hear of the death of Matthew Harding, an esteemed alumni, and exceptional artist, designer and friend. The School extends its heartfelt condolences to Freya Mac Laren and their children.

Matthew studied in the Wood Workshop with George Ingham, graduating with First Class Honours in 1995. Combining his training in carpentry, art and design and fine furniture construction, Matthew's practice expanded materially and conceptually.

Matthew's approach to his practice was diverse and his forms blended together the power of imagination and a keen observation of the natural world. The School acknowledges Matthew's passion, his skills, his drive and his legacy embedded in his unique sculptures both in Canberra and around the world.

Repost as follows from matthewharding.com.au

Tragically, Matthew Gerard Harding ended his life on 22 February 2018.

Matthew was loved and cherished by his partner, children, family and wide circle of friends. Matthew was a gifted creative artist, a deeply connected friend, and most importantly, Matthew was known for his deep love for his family: partner, four beautiful children Arabella (10), Lulu (9), Polly (6) and Hugo (4), mother, father and siblings.

Matthew was a renowned sculptor and has left an extraordinary legacy of work in Australia and around the world. He was brilliant and one of the most accomplished sculptors in Australia; he was compassionate and had a rare generosity of spirit.

Nobody shined as bright as Matthew.
