Katrina Sluis is Associate Professor and Head of Photography and Media Arts in the School of Art and Design, and convenor of the SOAD Computational Culture Lab. Her research is broadly concerned with the politics and aesthetics of art and photography in post-digital culture, and critical approaches to practice-led research in the art museum, from the perspective of contemporary curating. Having published extensively on the ‘softwareisation’ of photography over the past two decades, her recent work explores the curatorial pipelines of machine vision, critical approaches to AI, and the photographic cultures of computer science. In 2023 she initiated the project Critical AI in the Art Museum; she is presently an ANU co-investigator on the CHCI Global Humanities Institute ‘Design Justice AI’ and the ANU Integrated AI network.
Prior to joining ANU, was Senior Curator of Digital Programmes at The Photographers’ Gallery (2011-2019), London where she developed public projects on machine vision, synthetic imaging, net culture and speculative photographic education, including All I Know Is What’s On The Internet (2018), Post-Capitalist Photography Now! (2019), Jonas Lund: Operation Earnest Voice (2019) and Data/Set/Match (2019-20). During this period she also co-founded the Centre for the Study of the Networked Image at London South Bank University, developing partnerships with Serpentine Galleries, Rhizome and Fotomuseum Winterthur addressing contemporary art infrastructures and organisational practices in the post-digital museum. She has served on numerous digital advisory boards in the creative sector, including Serpentine Galleries, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and the National Gallery of Australia. With Andrew Dewdney she is the co-editor of The Networked Image in Post-Digital Culture (Routledge, 2022).
