Working Thesis Title: The Art of Janet Dawson
Supervisors: Dr Sarah Scott, Professor Chris McAuliffe, Dr Kate Warren
Janet Dawson MBE is an Australian painter, printmaker, and graphic artist whose art was highly influential during the 1960s. My study examines her overall art practice, including her investigations of natural phenomena. It utilises previously unknown archival material and interviews with the artist, and develops a new theoretical approach to her practice based on pre-Socratic, Romantic, phenomenological, and ecocritical theories.
